Sıfatların Cümle İçindeki Yeri

1. Sıfatların çoğu bir ismin önünde yer alırlar.

Örnek: a nice dress, a big house, a new course, etc…


2. Normalde fiilleri niteleyen kelimelere adverb denir. Ancak be, become, seem, look, appear, feel, taste, smell, sound fiilleriyle birlikte sıfat kullanılır ve sıfatlar hemen bu saydığımız fiillerden sonra gelir.


The girl is beautiful

You look tired

This soup tastes good.



Örnek: This film is new, isn’t it?

Örnek: He became ill after he played out in the cold.

Örnek: You seem / look / appear tired today.

Örnek: I felt great when I heard the news.

Örnek: My mum’s food tastes delicious.

Örnek: The trash collected in her house smelled awful.

Örnek: This idea sounds good.


3. Bazen sıfatlar isimden hemen sonra kullanılabilir; özellikle de kurumsallaşmış ifadelerde kullanım bu şekildedir.

Örnek: the Governor General, the Princess Royal, court martial, etc…


4. Relative clause’a benzer şekilde bazen sıfatlar isimlerden sonra kullanılabilir.

Örnek: He cashed all the money available in the account.

He cashed all the money which is available in the account.


5. Something, everything, vb. indefinite pronoun’lardan sonra sıfat kullanılabilir.

Örnek: I want to spend my summer holiday somewhere exciting.

Örnek: We need something cold to drink.



6. Verb + object + adjective



Örnek: I will get the entire staff ready in case of an inspection.



Örnek: Shall we paint the room blue?



7. As/how/so/too/this/that + adjective + a/an + noun



Örnek: He has as good a background as you.



Örnek: It was so cold a day that I couldn’t go out.



Örnek: I was surprised to see how talented an artist he is.



Örnek: He is too kind a person to make an offer like that.



Örnek: I can’t live in that big a house on my own.



SIFAT TÜRETME

a. Adjectives with Underlying Verb Forms (Fiillerden Türeyen Sıfatlar):

Fiillerde değişik ekler getirilerek sıfat türetilebilir.

1. suffix –ing

Fiil Sıfat

amaze = şaşırtmak amazing = şaşırtıcı

bore = sıkmak boring = sıkıcı

increase = artmak increasing = artan


2. suffixes -ed or -en

Fiil Sıfat

arrange = düzenlemek arranged = düzenlenmiş

burn = yanmak burned = yanmış, yanık

grow = büyümek grown = büyümüş



3. suffix -ive

Fiil Sıfat

act=davranmak active=etken, faal

attract=çekmek, cezbetmek attractive= çekici, cazibeli

decorate = süslemek decorative = süsleyici



4. suffixes –able/ible

Fiil Sıfat

advise = tavsiye etmek advisable = tavsiyeye değer

enjoy = hoşlanmak enjoyable = hoş

eat = yemek edible = yenir

b. Adjectives with Underlying Noun Forms (İsimlerden Türeyen Sıfatlar):

1. suffix -al

İsim Sıfat

center = merkez central = merkezi

face = yüz facial = yüze ait

nation = ulus national = ulusal



2. suffix -ive

İsim Sıfat

subject = özne subjective = öznel

object = nesne objective = nesnel

expense = masraf expensive = pahalı



3. suffix -ous

İsim Sıfat

adventure = macera adventurous = maceralı

fame = ün famous = ünlü

mountain = dağ mountainous = dağlık



4. suffix –like

İsim Sıfat

child = çocuk childlike = çocuksu, masum

lady = hanımefendi ladylike = hanımca, zarif



5. suffix -ish

İsim Sıfat

Turkey = Türkiye Turkish = Türkçe

fool = aptal, alık foolish = aptalca

-ish son eki bazı sıfatlara getirilerek yeni bir sıfat üretilir.

red = kırmızı reddish = kırmızımsı

6. suffix –less

İsim Sıfat

care = dikkat careless = dikkatsiz

worth = değer worthless = değersiz

leaf = yaprak leafless = yapraksız



7. suffix –ful

İsim Sıfat

care = dikkat careful = dikkatli

hope = umut hopeful = umutlu

harm = zarar harmful = zararlı



8. suffix –y

İsim Sıfat

wind = rüzgâr windy = rüzgârlı

sun = güneş sunny = güneşli



9. other siffixes (diğer son ekler)

friend = arkadaş friendly = arkadaşça, candan

gold = altın golden = altın (gibi)

America = Amerika American = Amerikalı

trouble = güçlük troublesome = sıkıntılı, güç
